Reading on Apple Books

Years ago, I purchased a Kindle Paperwhite from Best Buy during one of my trips to the United States. I was hoping to get back into the habit of reading. It didn’t work. I was not carrying it with me everywhere and I found it cumbersome to buy books on Kindle (with a non-US credit card) or download and upload PDF copies of what I wanted to read. I eventually sold it.

Years later, I’ve found the joy of reading again. Nothing trumps the proper feeling of opening a printed book and smelling it as you turn the pages. But let’s be realistic here: I’m not an avid book reader and in order to actually finish reading a book. I had to be practical.

I had to use something to read the book that I’d carry with me all the time. I had to have access to the book when I was unexpectedly stuck in traffic, waiting at the doctor’s office, or simply bored. The one thing that I knew I’d always have with me, the one thing that I’d remember first to bring with me no matter where I went, was the iPhone.

More book than Facebook

Over the weekend, I planned to finish reading a book.

It was a fiction book. “The Ruins” by Scott B. Smith. What made me want to read the book was that it involved killer plants. That was the plot of a story I’d read many, many years ago as a child. I wanted to see if that story was inspired by this book.

I’m not an avid book reader. In fact, these days, all of my reading comes from the web. I can’t remember the last time I finished reading a book. Seeing that I was immediately hooked to “The Ruins” as I started reading it, I decided to push through and actually manage to finish it this time.

I’d given myself two days. I finished it in one. Read more

The professor in the class was talking about how the film industry came out to be. We were watching some of the first films that were commercially released by Lumiere Brothers.

At one point, he said that people were blown away by watching motion pictures on the screen. Some even left the theater in fear when an oncoming train was shown on the display. It was so magical that the actual magicians’ business began to take a nosedive.

The keyword here is ‘magical.’

That led me to think, what ‘magical’ invention have I seen in my lifetime? And will there be any more?

I can’t answer the second question, but I think I know the answer to the first one.

Apple Keyboards Compared: The best and worst keyboard made by Apple

Some people are obsessed with cameras. Some can’t get enough of smartphones. Some have a lot of watches while others are fascinated by the good old pen. I’m obsessed with keyboards, and not the ones that are musical instruments.

My life with computer started in what’s known as cyber cafes that charged hourly for accessing the web. Those were some really bad computers with beat up keyboards. As I discovered my passion for blogging, the keyboard that I use became of paramount importance to me. I think that’s where my obsession with keyboard started.

I always loved MacBook Pro keyboards because they were the best I’ve ever tried. My editor at an online newspaper had a MacBook Pro and I loved typing on it.

Eventually, I got a MacBook Pro and I loved its chiclet keyboard (also known as island-style keyboard). Some people are enthusiastic about mechanical keyboards, and I’ve tried a few, but I always loved the chiclet-style keyboard. It gave my typing experience joy.
